An MLM home venture is a very different type of business than a traditional business. Traditionally in business you are fully focused on selling your products. MLM, also known as Network Marketing,on the other hand, is also fundamentally about selling your products, but it is about leveraging your time, effort and skills as well. The way MLMers do that is by building a team of distributors who will duplicate their efforts. So as an MLMer, you’re doing two things at the same time; you’re bringing people into your business, teaching them and helping them succeed, while you’re also marketing and selling your product or service. If you’re not systematically doing both of these things, you’re not maximizing your earning potential in MLM.
Another factor that makes MLM so untraditional is the cost involved in getting started. Generally you have to invest to get started in a non-MLM business. The reason for this is that you’re not just getting another job, you’re starting your own business. Businesses require money to start, jobs don’t. Nevertheless, in MLM there is hardly any cost to get started. In fact, many MLM companies these days just want you to buy their products and give you the business at no charge. This is a tremendous benefit of getting started with an MLM business, but it can also be a negative. When people get started in an MLM business and they don’t have to pay anything for it, they don’t think of it as a real business. They start treating it like a get-rich-quick scheme, like a quick way of getting out of their financial troubles.
When MLMers start treating their MLM business like a get-rich-quick scheme, they do not succeed and then start blaming their MLM company for their failure and start calling it a rip-off, because according to their expectations it was supposed to make them rich quick. When in reality the business of MLM was never meant to be a make-money-fast scheme.
Sure, like any other business or opportunity, there are some scammers out there who will sell you their get-rich-quick program disguised as an MLM business, take your hard earned money and disappear. These scammers do not represent the real MLM industry.
MLM scams can be avoided by using simple common sense. Ask these simple questions when considering an MLM business:
- Does this business opportunity make business sense?
- Are the products competitively priced?Would I buy the product even if there were no money making opportunity involved?
- Are they claiming to pay me for doing nothing? If they are, then run away from these scams as fast as you can!
- Are they promising to pay more money than they are taking in?
- Are they charging you sign-up fees or annual renewal fees? There is really no need for these.
Just remember, a legitimate MLM company will talk about their products first and then about their pay plan, and NOT the other way round.
MLM is a great way to make money in your own business. It’s simple, it’s inexpensive and it can work for just about anyone. Just make sure that you do some research on the company you are starting with, and just use basic common sense. This will ensure that you won’t be getting into anything that might be a scam.
Whatever you do, don’t let the fear of getting scammed stop you from joining a business that can change your life forever.
